Installing the brand new Icom ID5200 dual band D-STAR mobile radio in a Ford F250 Super Duty using a vehicle specific Lido mount, with no holes drilled in the dash. In this mobile ham radio install, I walk through how I mounted the ID5200 control head on the Lido mount, where I placed the main radio unit, how I routed power and cabling, and how the setup works on the road.
The Icom ID5200 replaces the long running ID5100 as Icom’s flagship VHF/UHF mobile. It has a 4.3 inch color touchscreen with a waterfall display, two independent receivers for true dual receive (FM/FM, FM/DV, and DV/DV), and separate dials, volume, and squelch controls for each band. Built in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enable D-STAR Terminal Mode and Access Point Mode, so you can reach the D-STAR network over the internet without a hotspot. It also has a built in GPS receiver, receives airband, and Icom has announced APRS support through a future firmware update.
Lido mounts are made for specific vehicles, so they fit your truck’s interior without drilling holes in the dashboard. If you want a clean, factory look radio install in your truck, an easy setup for EmComm and ARES deployments, or you’re thinking about upgrading from an ID5100, this install should help you plan your own.
Whether you’re setting up your first mobile ham radio station or upgrading your truck’s EmComm setup, this video shows the real world process from start to finish, including what went well and what I would do differently next time.
